Hay Fever
- Water nasal discharge, sneezing, itchy
eyes and nose
- Usually associated with a particular
season
- 70% of hay fever is caused by ragweed
pollen
Asthma
- Recurrent attacks of shortness of
breath, cough, and expectoration of tenacious mucoid sputum;
- Prolonged exhalation phase with
generalized wheezing and abnormal breath sounds;
- Lab findings: increased eosinophils in
blood, increased serum IgE levels, positive food and/or inhalant allergy
tests;
- Affects 3% of the population; most
common in children under ten.
In children under ten, males are more likely to have asthma 2:1 over
females;
- Rates are rising due to increased
pollution, food additives, genetic manipulation of plants, earlier
introduction to solid foods and possibly the exposure to the peruses
vaccine;
- Two Types: Extrinsic (atrophic)
Asthma - an allergic reaction with increased IgE serum levels.
Intrinsic Asthma bronchial reaction to toxic chemicals, cold air,
exercise, infection or emotional upset;
- The release of our bodies own
chemicals, know as histamines and leukotrienes, stimulate mast cells
that increase inflammation in various body tissues;
- Our own adrenal glands produce
hormones cortisol and epinephrine that relax bronchial muscle.
Therapeutic Approaches
I. Decrease exposure to airborne
allergens and food allergens.
II. Avoid airborne allergens:
- Removing dogs, cats, carpet, rugs, and
upholstered furniture;
- If you cant do this, make sure the
bedroom is allergy proof as possible by encasing mattress in allergy
proof plastic, wash sheets, blankets, pillow cases and mattress pads
every week in hot water with additive free and fragrance free detergent.
- Air purifiers with HEPA filters.
III. Food allergy: Common allergic
foods are eggs, fish, shellfish, nuts/peanuts, milk, chocolate, wheat,
corn, citrus and food colorings.
IV. Hypochlohydria: Decreased
gastric acid causing incomplete food break down and increased gut
permeability.
V. Candida Albicans: Can be a
causative factor in asthma.
VI. Vegan Diet: (Elimination of
all animal products) Requires 4-12 months of diet to be effective in
70-90% of people who follow through.
VII. Omega 3 Essential Fatty
Acids: Fish oil supplementation that contains eicosapemtaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), positively affecting leukotrienes.
VIII. Reduce Food Additives:
Artificial dyes, especially tartrozine (orange) and commonly used
additives such as benyodotes, sulphur dioxide and sulphites.
IX. Nutritional Supplementation:
Children with asthma have been shown to have a defect in their metabolism
of the amino acid tryptophan. Addition of:
A. Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine ) -
25-50 mg 2x/day
B. Vitamin B12 - 100mg / day orally or weekly injection
C. Vitamin C - 10-30mg / day for every 2 pounds of body weight
divided in doses
D. Vitamin E - 200-400 IU per day
E. Magnesium 200-400mg 3x/day
F. Flavonoids (choose one):
i. Quercitin 400 mg twenty
minutes before each meal
ii. Grape seed Extract 50-100mg 3xday
iii. Green Tea Extract (50% polyphenol content) 200-300mg
3x/day
or drink green tea liberally
iv. Ginkgo biloba Extract- 80mg 3x/day
G. Carotenes - 25, 000-50,000 IU
/ day
H. Selenium 200-400-mg / day
I. DHEA Use only as directed; specifically and only:
i. Women under 40 who have
auto-immune diseases such as lupus,
RA, and MS. Dosage 50-100- mg / day
ii. Women after menopause, 5-15 mg / day
iii. Men aged 40-50, usually 15-25 mg / day
iv. Men over 50, 20-50 mg / day
J. Botanical Medicines
i. Tyolphora asthmatica 200
mg of leaves or 40 mg of extract
ii. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) powered root 1-2g 3xday or
fluid extract (1:1) 2-4 ml 3xday or solid, dry powered extract (4:0)
250-500mg 3xday.
K. Chiropractic care removes
nerve interference and improves the health of the body. Although a
variety of vertebrae can subluxate
(misalign and cause nerve interference), the primary vertebrae that
affect the lungs and bronchial tubes are C3 and T3.
